Music for your Wedding DVDs

by Keith on September 28, 2009 in Advice Articles

Brides are always asking me for advice about what songs they can choose for their Wedding DVDs. There is no simple answer to this one. I encourage couples to pick appropriate songs that are important and meaningful to them. Upon request, I can show couples a list of songs that are chosen the most often. Here is that list (in alphabetical order):

  • Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
  • Barbara Streisland & Bryan Adams – I’ve Finally Found Someone
  • Beatles – Something
  • Bruce Springsteen – Secret garden
  • Counting Crows – Accidentally in Love
  • Damien Rice – The Blower’s Daughter
  • Elton John – Your Song
  • Elvis Costello – She
  • Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight
  • Eva Cassidy – Songbird
  • Joe Cocker – You Are So Beautiful
  • Lonestar – Amazed
  • Louis Armstrong – We Have All The Time In The World
  • Mic Christopher – Heyday
  • Moulin Rouge Soundtrack – Come What May
  • Nat King Cole – Let There Be Love
  • Robbie Williams – She’s the One
  • Sade – By Your Side
  • Tom Baxter – Better
  • Van Morrison – Have I Told You Lately

I hope this helps those of you who are stuck for inspiration!

A word of thanks

by Keith on July 23, 2009 in Testimonials

Regular readers might remember this blog entry where I was talking about a groom’s grandmother who was 100 years old?

Well, not long after receiving their completed Wedding DVDs, Maria and Shane sent me this email:

Hi Keith,

We just watched our wedding DVD and wanted to thank you for a capturing the day so well.  It was really special to relive the day and to always have it to refresh the memories in the coming years.  There was so much that we forgot about or didnt even know about and we saw them tonight, some for the first time…..we’re amazed that you captured so much without being obtrusive on the day.  We don’t know how many times we said to each other “I didn’t even know Keith was there” as we watched various parts of the DVD!

The footage was put together very well with the music and the packaging was nicely personalized.  It’s a really top quality job and we can’t thank you enough for helping us capture our day forever.

We will be passing your name on to friends/family who may be getting married in the coming years.  In the meantime, we hope you are keeping well and keeping busy!

 Many thanks,
Maria & Shane

Their wedding reception was held at Carton House and it’s an impressive wedding venue to say the least. I was working alongside the ever professional wedding photographer Jenny McCarthy on the day.

Recently, while browsing an online wedding forum, I came across a posting from a bride-to-be who was asking what is the point of hiring a professional videographer for her wedding when she can simply ask her brother’s friend (who happens to like cameras) to film her day for free instead?!

Hmmm. This got me wondering. Perhaps there is a general misconception out there that anybody can film a wedding. I must admit that I agree. Yes, anybody can film a wedding. But, can they do it properly?

Below is a short comparison video clip that compares footage from two different cameras. It is split screen: one is from a guest’s camcorder at a wedding and the other is from a professional video camera operated by the official wedding videographer.

In these recessionary / credit-crunch times, it is probably tempting for some couples to cut a professional wedding DVD right out of their budget. While this may seem like a clever thing to do before the wedding, we are finding time and time again that this is a move that is seriously regretted by the same couples in hindsight after their wedding.

I am often asked, as are many of my videography peers, to help rescue amateur wedding footage and put something together from it. This is normally an impossible task because if it wasn’t filmed right in the first place using proper equipment, then there usually isn’t a lot that can be done about it afterwards.

It is sometimes forgotten that the only tangible items left after most weddings are the photo album and the wedding DVD. Decisions to drop the wedding video in favour of ice sculptorschair covers and chocolate fountains are often seriously regretted by brides and grooms very soon after their wedding. It’s too late then!

But don’t just take my word for it. All anyone has to do is read through various postings on any wedding forum and draw their own conclusions. Time and time again, brides write about their post-wedding regrets of not hiring a professional wedding videographer. It’s obviously too late for them, but thankfully they are more than willing to warn other brides about making the same mistake. Hats off to them!

The value of a well-filmed and edited wedding DVD truely is priceless.

Chloe & Dave met in Australia on Valentines Day, 14th February 2005 and had their amazing wedding reception in Tulfarris House overlooking the Blessington Lakes exactly 4 years later. Everyone was blessed with the weather. Considering we had just come out of 2 weeks of snow, the only trace of snow left on Saturday was on the mountains behind the lakes – a breathtaking backdrop.

Photographer for the day was Dave O’Shea. What a gent! It was our first time to work together and a pleasure to do so. It’s always refreshing to meet a photographer who is very welcoming of a wedding videographer and willing to work with instead of against. Yes unfortunately there are a small number of photographers out there who would give the impression that they are somehow threatened by the couple having a wedding video. It sounds ridiculous because it is!

Chloe & Dave were great to work with on the day, both were good fun and really enjoyed their day. I can’t wait to start editing their footage and putting it together for them. It will be a few weeks though because I’m still working my way through a (getting smaller) backlog.

I almost forgot to talk briefly about Tulfarris House! What a place! It was slightly confusing at first not knowing which building to drive to in order to capture the couple arriving. But once we sorted that out, the management and staff were nothing but professional and welcoming. I look forward to filming more weddings at this venue.

2008 :: A year in review

by Keith on December 17, 2008 in News, Technology

What a year it has been! Our busiest year so far. We’re still very busy working our way through the Autumn backlog (hence the severe lack of posts recently) and doing our best to get as many DVDs out before Christmas. Naturally, we won’t be cutting any corners in our quality department to meet this demand – just putting in the extra hours required between now and then!

Each year, we strive to keep up with the latest technology and this year certainly was no different. Early in 2008 saw our conversion to High Definition (HD) where we purchased a Sony PMW-EX1 along with an LG 6-speed Blu-ray burner. To our knowledge, we were one of the first wedding video studios in Ireland to not only film in HD but also capable of delivering in HD. Towards the end of 2008, it still amazes me at the lack of other wedding video companies who can offer this service.

Our main editing PCs were at that time sufficient enough to handle the extra overhead required from HD editing, but to keep things fresh, we’ve just ordered the fastest Asus Rampage Extreme II motherboard and the latest and greatest Intel CPU (i7 @ 3.2 Ghz). Once these components arrive and we build our new beast, it promises to render HD footage twice as fast as our existing HD machines. Believe it or not, this will eventually translate to a quicker delivery time of our completed wedding DVDs.

Earlier this month, we also added a second Sony PMW-EX1 to our arsenal. We love this camera so much that we just couldn’t say no. Taking advantage of the weak sterling currency was a nice bonus too!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for 2009!

Marriott Hotel, Druid’s Glen, Co. Wicklow

by Keith on November 27, 2008 in News

I love shooting weddings at this hotel, and not just because it’s practically on my own doorstep. It is professionally run, serves good food and has a good atmosphere. Just some of the reasons that make this place a joy to work in.

I was shooting there on Saturday and by the time we got to the hotel, it was freezing and there wasn’t much available light outside. So the wedding photographer, Jenny McCarthy decided to do the photo shoot indoors. It is rare to find a hotel that has reasonable scope for shooting stuff inside. There are either no suitable backgrounds / backdrops or the available light is poor. At least with the Marriott, there are a few decent spots (more than a lot of hotels) for taking indoor photographs.

Jenny is fantastic to work with. She puts the bride and groom at ease and develops a great rapport with them. Check out her sample portfolio on her website: www.photosbyjen.ie

The Hamlet Court Hotel

by Keith on November 22, 2008 in News

The Hamlet Court Hotel

I can’t say enough good things about The Hamlet Court Hotel. It’s a family-run hotel owned by John O’Neill not far from Enfield, Co. Meath.

I’m just back in the door from shooting a wedding there. Not only does the hotel owner John and his team treat the bride and groom like royalty, they also treat the videographer and photographer in very high regard too.

It’s all of the little touches that makes the difference. The hotel management and staff are friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. If the photo session is running a little late, there is no panic as Management will liase with the chef to make sure that the food preparations are in sync with the revised dinner call time. This doesn’t happen in many places – trust me!

At today’s wedding, I overheard the owner giving a little bit of advice to the best man just before his speech as he was nervous and somewhat unprepared. I was pleasantly surprised to hear him advising to present the bouquets to each mother one at a time so that it made life easier for the videographer (i.e. yours truly) to capture it properly. (This was a one camera shoot today).

Just before speeches and cake-cutting etc, the management will usually make sure that the videographer is ready to record before they give the go ahead to begin. Nice touch. The hotel microphone frequency was presented to me without asking, nice one! When filming a wedding, we tune into the hotel sound system wherever possible, to help ensure crystal quality sound so that you can hear the speeches properly and without muffle.

Naturally, as professionals, we can never rely on anybody to give us the signal – we need to be ready all of the time. However, as it is a rare occurance for a hotel to be conscious of the role of the wedding videographer, it is well worth mentioning here.

I can highly recommend the Hamlet Court to both newly engaged couples who are thinking of having their reception there and of course to fellow videographers who may have to film there!
